A must to check out THE MYSTERY PLAN

A must to check out:   THE MYSTERY PLAN, who, under the leadership of JASON HERRING, pay homage to actor JC QUINN, perhaps best known for his role in ‘Vision Quest’ with Matthew Modine. Their new single ‘Ballad of JC Quinn’ was inspired by their friendship, mutual admiration and tragic death in 2000. This and the ultra cool single ‘Al Gore Rhythms’ foreshadow the band’s new ‘Zsa Zsa’ LP, their fifth to date. The single is out now  with LP to follow on April 4.

The Mystery Plan have announced their fifth album ‘Zsa Zsa’, which will be released in early April via boutique label Ten Millimeter Omega Recordings. Ahead of this, they present the lead single ‘Ballad of JC Quinn’, following up their recently-released infectious Massive Attack-esque single Al Gore Rhythms’.

Produced by the legendary John Fryer and Jason Herring, this record also features such notable guests as Micah Gaugh (The Veldt / Apollo Heights), Ian Masters, That Guy Smitty and Snap Nation. This is not the first time The Mystery Plan has worked with Fryer, having previously collaborated on their fourth full-length release ‘Queensland Ballroom’, released in late 2017, and the ‘Electric Love’ single.

Based in Charlotte, NC, the band is comprised of Jason Herring, Amy Herring, Jeff Chester, Otis Hughes and Patty McLaughlin. Since forming in 2010, they’ve managed to release 10 EPs and LPs combined.

JC Quinn was an actor from NYC with many film and television credits, including “Barfly”, “the Abyss”, “Visionquest” and countless others. He moved to Charlotte in the late 1990s to be closer to his grandchildren. We met at a downtown watering hole called Cafe 521, owned and operated by his good friend from New York, Peter Herrero. That’s where I met JC, along with many other actors, such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Bernadette Peters, etc.. They would always stop at the café when in town to visit their good friend Peter,” says Jason Herring.

“JC and I struck up a nice friendship. He was a fan of ours and would come to shows and stand right up front so we could see him. A very lovely man indeed. Sadly, JC died in Mexico while shooting a film a few years ago. I’ve always wanted to pay tribute to him, and we have finally done so with this song. The lyrics are a blend of what we would do with him now if he were still here, and iconic lines from some of his films.”

‘Zsa Zsa’ was recorded at Catalyst Recording and various local studios over a 2+ year stretch following a number of Southeast U.S. tours in promotion of the band’s ‘Queensland Ballroom’ album. This new record touches of several different styles – everything from deep mellow shoegaze and folky ambient to upbeat dancable trip-hop and electronica.

‘Zsa Zsa’ finds the quintet moving further afield of its earlier psych-folk leaning to land on something more akin to the down-tempo approach of Portishead and Zero 7, mixed with early 4AD action. That later is in no small part due to the return of band collaborator, producer John Fryer (too many A-list credits to list here), and new Mystery Plan friend Ian    Masters, former bassist-vocalist of influential British shoegazers Pale Saints.

No to the Mundane! Vix20 releases an Homage to Synthwave~

No to the Mundane~ Vix20 releases an Homage to Synthwave!  Continuing their trend of pushing the envelope of their repertoire the band known for Power Pop is offering something different this time around.

Check out the song here:

Their latest release: Tron takes the train:  “Moving for a short time away from their power pop roots, Vix new track Tron Takes the train pays homage to the best of Synth wave inspired by all things retro and 1980’s. Tron  started life at Brockley towers with CJ’s synth collection and thanks to a small twist of fate was heard by the creative team at Never Pixels. Fast forward to Jan 20 it is now the sound track of the Minecraft map future city on the Xbox.  Best enjoyed loudly with shoulder pads and permed hair…. Normal Power Pop will resume shortly…

Vix20 are Gary Mills and CJ, two music industry veterans who grew so disillusioned with the state of every element of the music industry that they both walked away vowing not to return…fast forward a few years, now rejuvenated, though no less prickly about the Modern Age, they return, to quote the band themselves, “we’re hard rockers turned to the dark side of pop”. As evidenced on their single, Digital Age, their passion for power pop (don’t say ‘punk pop’ to them, it suggests too much jumping around) and dexterity with words combines to become insanely catchy 3-minute thunderbolts. Completing the  Vix line up is long time conspirators Rich Norris and Kill, with a busy year ahead the next single is planned for April and the band will appear at the International pop overthrow festival in May at the legendary Liverpool venue The Cavern.

Championing Mental Health…

Triple Talented Kenton Hall author, musician and actor~  He was born in Estevan, Saskatchewan – the sunshine capital of his home country – but now lives and works in the United Kingdom where his disposition makes more sense. From 2000 until 2010 he was the lead singer and lyricist for the band ‘ist’ who released three critically acclaimed albums before breaking up due to musical amnesia. in 2015, he wrote and directed the feature film “A Dozen Summers” and in 2018, his first play “The Public Interest”. Bisection is his first full-length prose work. But watch out….  He is threatening a follow-up More music is also on the horizon for Kenton, with his first solo album, “Idiopath” – building on the themes of Bisection – currently being recorded.

About the book… Bisection: Since childhood, Canadian author Kenton Hall has fought a battle with bipolar disorder. At the moment, they’re calling it a draw, but they’ve both taken the round on more than one occasion. In the interim, he also escaped a cult, became a father to twins – eventually a single father to twins – and pursued a career as a writer, actor and musician.  No one is claiming he makes things easy on himself.

Bisection is not your average book about mental health. It is the story of one man, two children and bipolar disorder – a funny, heart-breaking, fierce and hopeful book that dares to find humour in the darkest places – and shed enough light to lift their shadows.  Imagine Douglas Adams wrote a book about mental health. Then imagine Douglas Adams was shorter and more regularly moose adjacent. That’s Bisection!

You can find the book on Amazon and other book selling sites.

New Music From Melodywhore~

Dark Wave Synth Rocker Melodywhore’s announces first 2020 release is a duo of tracks, one a rework of an old melodywhore track and one brand new song, Dissolve and Paid In Full.

While there are definite electronic elements in these tracks, there is more of a rock guitar feel presented.

Dissolve was written back in the early 2000s and was initially published on the acidplanet site.  Back then it was a mix of purchased and created loops and over the years,

it was reworked for the film Without Light and later reworked again probably for an online site like myspace.

With the recent rework of the track Envious Moon released by Plike in late 2019, this was a no-brainer.  Gathering talented artists to contribute to the project, he reached out to the likes of Rath Campbell on acoustic and electric guitar, Chris Wilburn of Upon Eventual Collapse on noise and additional guitar and Sapphira Vee on vocals to join him in this venture.

Paid In Full is the second track in this two-song release.  This song began as a collab with a different artist but sometimes things don’t go as planned. Rather than scrap the entire song, melodywhore reworked the track with help from again Chris Wilburn and Sapphira Vee.

The plans for 2020 include remixes, collabs and a full melodywhore album later in the year.

melodywhore is a darkwave electronic project with post rock and industrial roots. it began around 2000 and has had a number of incarnations since. melodywhore is currently djing a weekly show on Radio Dark Tunnel and working on remixes, collaborations and a full album late 2020.

Film and TV composer Kepa Lehtinen releases new single

Finland-based film and TV composer Kepa Lehtinen releases new single “16mm”  Taken from the upcoming album It Is OK To Be Sad And Dark, “16mm” is a somber and hypnotic ballad performed on theremin, piano, and double bass captured with a gritty noir-inspired sound that represents the attainment of a major artistic goal for Lehtinen. “I have chased this sound for a long time,”he says, “retro but ultra hi-fi, the dark sound of the past modernized. The sonic equivalent of the way 16mm movies look.”

Listen to the new song here

The theremin is a unique electronic instrument which produces sound when your hands interact with the electro-magnetic field it emits without actually touching the device itself. It was invented in the labs of KGB  by Russian engineer Leon Theremin in the early 1920s. Letinen’s previous theremin piece “Kontula” has been streamed almost 500,000 times on Spotify and “16mm” will again bring the unusual, violin-like instrument to a large, modern audience.

Kepa Lehtinen was born in Helsinki, Finland in 1971 and began studying music in childhood, eventually learning to play piano, synthesizers, theremin, and drums. He went on to study Sound Design at Finland’s Aalto University and has since written music for many films, commercials, and TV productions. He routinely works as a composer, sound editor, and sound designer. His work has appeared in award-winning Finnish titles such as Kimmo (TV series),  Almost 18 (feature film), and A Stone LeftUnturned (short film). He released his first solo album, Playing Theremin, in 2018. In 2019 he released Helsinki in November.

Tighter

A lyrical song of contradictions with a musical electronic style to match.  Using a funk beat mixed with live Latin percussion, female vocals float on top with crazy high harmonies, a big pre chorus and hook.  The love story speaks of removing all barriers to find each other in the highest, deepest love. Perfect rhythms for high energy dance floors. Live conga’s give this track a latin dance feel.  The video was shot in Las Vegas with aerial views of the Strip, High Roller and street scenes of the city that never sleeps, playing off the song’s theme “climbing down into you.”
